04 Mar From Cup to Compost: Giving Coffee a Second Life Outdoors
Coffee is an amazing produce, not just for drinking but also for its by products that are used in a variety of industries including cosmetics and manufacturing. Two of these that you can use too are coffee grouds and chaff (the papery flakes from roasting beans).
If you’re brewing coffee at home, don’t toss those used grounds – your garden loves them just as much as you do! Coffee grounds and chaff are packed with organic matter that can help enrich your soil, feed your plants, and even keep pests away. It’s an easy and eco-friendly way to give your garden a little caffeine boost while reducing waste.
Used coffee grounds can be sprinkled directly into garden beds or added to your compost pile. They’re slightly acidic and full of nitrogen, making them great for leafy plants, like tomatoes and hydrangeas. Just don’t overdo it – a thin layer is best, or mix it into the soil to avoid clumping. As for coffee chaff (we have loads of this stuff, so just ask us for some), it’s super lightweight and composts beautifully. It’s great as a mulch or mixed into compost, helping to create a fluffy, nutrient-rich blend your plants will love. So next time you brew, save those leftovers – your garden will thank you! 🌼🪴
