04 Jan Americano or Long Black?
Long black and Americano are very similar espresso-based drinks, but they differ mainly in how they’re made, and that small difference can change the taste and texture.
☕ Americano:
An Americano is made by starting with a shot (or two) of Espresso and topping it up with hot water. This method tends to create a lighter-bodied drink with a more diluted crema (the golden layer on top of espresso), and sometimes the flavour can feel a bit more mellow or muted.
☕ Long Black:
A Long Black, popular in Australia and New Zealand, is made the opposite way: you start with hot water and then pour the espresso over it. This preserves more of the crema and often results in a bolder, richer flavour with a slightly more intense aroma and body.
So, while they use the same ingredients, espresso and hot water, the order of pouring makes a difference in how the drink feels and tastes. If you love a good crema and a bit more espresso punch, the Long Black might be your go-to. If you prefer something smoother and gentler, the Americano is a great choice.
